ROUND ROCK BOYS CAPTURE REGION IV-6A TITLE

Andrew Esparza wins individual crown after losing a shoe early in the race

October 26, 2026 | Corpus Christi, Texas
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Round Rock boys cross country team delivered a championship performance at the UIL Region IV Conference 6A meet, winning the regional title with 107 points. The Dragons were led by Andrew Esparza, who claimed the individual championship in 15:05.75 despite an early-race mishap that could have ended his bid for the title.
Just after the start, Esparza lost one of his shoes. He continued racing and ran much of the course with only the spike on his other foot. Rather than back off, Esparza stayed composed and worked his way to the front, crossing the finish line first to become the Region IV 6A individual champion.

Round Rock finished 36 points ahead of runner-up Schertz Clemens, which scored 143. Lake Travis placed third with 153 points, followed by San Antonio Sotomayor with 154. The Dragons' winning total reflected a strong team effort throughout the lineup, complementing Esparza's individual victory with the depth needed to separate from a competitive regional field.
The venue added another layer of difficulty. The cross-country course at Texas A&M–Corpus Christi is a particularly demanding place to race, with a challenging layout that tests runners' strength, focus and ability to maintain rhythm. Round Rock had to manage those demands while competing against the region's strongest 6A programs.
