Round Rock Boys Take Third at Nike South

COLLEGE STATION — Round Rock High School delivered a strong team performance at the Nike South Elite boys race Saturday, finishing third with 147 points in a deep field at the Watts Cross Country Course.

The Dragons' performance was particularly notable because Round Rock competed without two of its top 10 runners. Despite the absences, Round Rock put five runners inside the top 51 and finished ahead of several highly regarded programs.

Leo Brasil led the way for the Dragons, placing fifth overall in 15:14.9. Brasil was followed by Zachary Stevens, who finished 14th in 15:38.9, giving Round Rock two runners among the race's top 14.

Devansh Garg was Round Rock's third scorer, finishing 29th in 16:01.4. The Dragons' final two scoring positions were separated by just 2.4 seconds, with Cameron Pav taking 48th in 16:29.0 and Jake Marshall finishing 51st in 16:31.4.

The five scoring runners averaged approximately 15:59.1, with a 1:16.5 spread from Brasil to Marshall.

Just behind the scoring five were Gavin Shalem, who finished 52nd in 16:31.5, and Henry Lynn, who was 57th in 16:35.5. Shalem finished only one-tenth of a second behind Marshall, underscoring the depth within the Round Rock group that competed Saturday.

A podium finish with room for more

The third-place result takes on additional significance considering Round Rock was not at full strength, with two runners from its usual top 10 unavailable for the meet.

That meant the Dragons had to rely on runners further down their depth chart to fill out the lineup against some of the strongest teams in the field. Pav and Marshall responded by running within seconds of one another, while Shalem and Lynn provided additional depth immediately behind them.

The result was a team score of 147 points, just 19 points behind second-place Conroe The Woodlands (128). Austin Vandegrift won the team competition with 70 points.

Round Rock also finished ahead of Houston Strake Jesuit (161), Austin Lake Travis (201), St. Thomas (216) and the other teams shown in the top 10.

Brasil leads a balanced group

Brasil's 15:14.9 was the fifth-fastest individual time in the race, providing Round Rock with a strong front-end presence. Stevens' 15:38.9 gave the Dragons another runner near the front, while Garg's 16:01.4 kept the gap to the team's first two runners manageable.

The combination of Brasil and Stevens at the front, Garg's sub-16:02 performance and the tightly packed group behind them allowed Round Rock to produce a 147-point podium finish.

With two of the team's top 10 runners absent Saturday, the result also provided Round Rock with a valuable look at its depth heading into the championship portion of the season.
