Esparza captures Elite Boys championship as Round Rock continues strong start to the 2026 cross country season

DENTON, Texas — Round Rock High School turned in another impressive early-season performance Saturday at the Coach T-Marcus Invitational, competing against many of the strongest cross country programs and individual runners in Texas.

The Dragons traveled to North Lakes Park in Denton for one of the state’s premier early-season meets and responded with a performance that demonstrated both elite front-end talent and continued development throughout the varsity lineup.

At the front of the field, Andrew Esparza delivered the headline performance for Round Rock, winning the Elite Boys 5K championship in 14:30.

Esparza’s victory produced the top performance in Texas at the time and placed him among the leading high school runners in the country during the opening weeks of the season. His win came against a deep and talented field assembled from programs across the state.

Round Rock’s success, however, extended beyond the individual championship.

Leo Brasil continued his strong season with a 15:10 performance, while Zachary Stevens finished in 15:22. Devansh Garg added a 15:59, and Gavin Shalem completed the Dragons’ scoring group with a 16:35.

Together, the performances gave Round Rock another opportunity to evaluate its varsity depth against championship-level competition.

“The Dragons continue to show that they have the front-end talent and developing depth necessary to compete with the best teams in Texas.”

The Coach T Invitational annually serves as an important measuring point for many of the state’s top cross country programs. With teams traveling from across Texas to compete in Denton, the meet provides athletes with an early look at the type of competition they may encounter later in the postseason.

For Round Rock, Saturday’s race was another step in a season focused on steady improvement.

Esparza’s individual championship provided the most visible result, but the performances behind him were equally important to the Dragons’ long-term goals. Pack development, consistency and reducing the gap between scoring runners will become increasingly important as Round Rock moves toward the district and regional championships.

The Dragons have continued to improve throughout the opening weeks of the season while competing against increasingly stronger fields. The Coach T meet provided another opportunity to race under pressure and gain experience against some of the state’s premier programs.

Rather than viewing the Denton performance as a finished product, Round Rock will use the results as another benchmark in its preparation for the championship portion of the season.

The Dragons return to competition Saturday, September 12, at the Cedar Park Invitational.
