Mens Week 4: Coach T Marcus Invitational Champion

ragons Show Depth at Coach T Invitational Round Rock Gold finishes runner-up in elite field while Silver squad delivers strong pack performance DENTON, Texas — The Round Rock High School boys cross country team demonstrated both front-end talent and program depth at the 2026 Coach T–Marcus Invitational at North Lakes Park, competing against one of the deepest fields of the Texas cross country season. Round Rock’s Gold squad finished second in the elite team competition with 163 points, trailing Austin Vandegrift’s 126 and finishing just ahead of third-place Aledo with 169. The Dragons produced a 15:31 scoring average in a race featuring many of the top runners and programs in Texas. Senior Andrew Esparza provided the signature performance of the meet, capturing the individual championship in 14:30. Esparza defeated Lake Travis standout Lucas Kranz, who finished in 14:32, and Lake Highlands’ Rhett Austin, who ran 14:34. At the time of the race, Esparza’s performance ranked No. 1 in Texas and No. 2 nationally. The Dragons were far from a one-runner team. Leo Brasil finished 13th in 15:10, followed by Zachary Stevens in 20th at 15:22. Devansh Garg added a 15:59, while Gavin Shalem completed Round Rock’s scoring five in 16:35. The combination gave Round Rock five scorers between 14:30 and 16:35 against a championship-caliber field. Round Rock’s Silver squad also produced an impressive showing, displaying the depth that will become increasingly important as the Dragons move toward the championship portion of the season. Miles McDonald led the group with an outstanding 16:34, placing seventh in the Open race. Zeke Guerra followed closely in 11th at 16:41, with Henry Lynn finishing 14th in 16:43. Three Round Rock runners placing among the first 14 finishers demonstrated the strength developing behind the Dragons’ top varsity group. The Silver performance was particularly encouraging because of the tight grouping at the front. Only nine seconds separated McDonald, Guerra and Lynn, providing Round Rock with another competitive pack capable of challenging for varsity positions as the season progresses. The Coach T Invitational gave Round Rock an important measuring stick against many of the programs it could encounter later in the postseason. The Gold squad proved it can compete near the front of an elite field, while the Silver group showed that the Dragons’ strength extends well beyond the first five runners. For Round Rock, the takeaway from Denton was bigger than an individual championship or a runner-up team finish. The Dragons demonstrated the combination every championship program needs: an elite runner at the front, multiple athletes capable of running at a high varsity level, and a developing second group creating competition throughout the roster. With the championship portion of the schedule approaching, Round Rock leaves Coach T with another strong performance—and evidence that the Dragons continue to move in the right direction.
